Loire Cotler, Vocal Recordings, and the u47
One of our coolest clients, Grammy nominated rhythm vocalist, composer, sound designer (and much more), Loire Cotler, is absolutely dominating the film and video game industry. She is the enchanting, larger-than-life voice in both Dune movies, Raya and the Last Dragon; and her most recent work includes being featured in the video game Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.
Cotler recorded some of her Dune: Part 2 vocals at our very own Lakehouse Recording Studios. She, for the second time now, channeled her original lyrical chants and vocal designing to create the chilling sounds that are unique to the Dune universe. Hans Zimmer, composer of the Oscar-winning score of Dune: Part One, describes Loire as “…fearless…beautifully terrifying…She sang just one note, and it tore the enamel off my teeth and ripped my eyeballs out”.
Loire also recorded some of the voice-over work for the new video game, Elden Ring: Shadow of Erdtree, at Lakehouse, which was released June 2024. Check out her voice in the trailer here!
Presence and Clarity: The U47 has a distinctive presence boost in the high-mid frequencies, which adds clarity and definition to vocals. This helps vocals sit well in a mix, cutting through without sounding harsh.
Versatility: While it's especially favored for vocals, the U47 is also highly versatile and can be used effectively on various instruments like acoustic guitars, string instruments, and as a room mic for drums.
Build Quality: Neumann microphones are known for their exceptional build quality and durability. The U47 is no exception, often lasting for decades when well-maintained.
Multiple Polar Patterns: The U47 typically features switchable polar patterns (cardioid and omnidirectional). This flexibility allows for different recording techniques and environments, providing more control over the sound capture.
Character and Texture: The U47 adds a unique character and texture to recordings, often described as “vintage” or “classic.” This quality is highly sought after in modern recordings that aim to emulate the warmth and depth of earlier eras.
Voice over work, whether acting, singing, or both, is when someone uses their voice in radio, television, film, theatre, and other presentations. Here at Lakehouse Recording Studios, our space is perfect for sound recording just like this. More specifically, our Studios North & South Iso-Booth’s are the ideal environment for recording projects with wide volume ranges (Loire Cotler’s “dune scream”, to her speaking parts in Elden Ring). These booth’s main purpose is to isolate from extraneous voices and is acoustically dead so nothing gets in the way of a clear, direct sound.
